Our Approach

We believe that the best care possible is that in which we make the diagnosis accurately, assess the patient using an integrated approach, and then decide with the patient, what approach has the best chance of restoring their health. Such an assessment involves appropriate blood and other tests to ensure no other cause is found for their ill health. We provide a physical examination of our patients, as well as an assessment of their fears, feelings, and beliefs about their illness, and also an assessment for possible stresses in their lives, which might be affecting them.

Possible treatments include medical care and guided self-help, as well as referral to occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a psychologist, or consideration of a group rehabilitation programme (see below).

What can I expect from the Service?

We have found that three-quarters of our patients with CFS/ME significantly improve or recover with treatment in our clinic; research has suggested that a quarter recover their health and a further half significantly improve.  For some people recovery may not necessarily mean a return to their previous lifestyle, if this contributed to them becoming ill in the first place.

Some patients may not improve whilst in our service, but we would expect to help them to cope better with their illness and manage symptoms more effectively.  Some patients may find other approaches to managing their ill health more helpful than those we provide here.
